Bowl Types Explained
Egyptian (Traditional)
The standard bowl with multiple holes at the bottom. Shisha juice drips through the holes into the stem, which wastes flavour and creates a mess. Still, a quality Egyptian bowl works fine for casual smoking — and they cost almost nothing.
Phunnel
A single raised spire in the centre replaces the multiple holes. Shisha juice stays in the bowl instead of dripping down, preserving flavour and extending session length. This is what most serious smokers use.
Vortex
Similar concept to the phunnel but with multiple holes on a raised platform. Performance falls between Egyptian and phunnel. Less popular now that phunnel bowls have become the standard.
Silicone
Heat-resistant silicone that's virtually unbreakable and easy to clean. The trade-off is less heat retention than clay — sessions can feel slightly less intense. Good for outdoor use or clumsy smokers.

For home use where you want maximum flavour and smoke, clay is still king.
How to Pick the Right Bowl Size
Bowl size determines how much tobacco you use per session and how long the session lasts:
- Small (10–15g capacity) — Solo sessions, 30–45 minutes. Less tobacco waste.
- Medium (15–25g capacity) — The sweet spot. Good for solo or sharing. 45–75 minutes.
- Large (25g+ capacity) — Group sessions. 60–90+ minutes. Uses more tobacco.

For most smokers, yes. Phunnel bowls retain shisha juice, produce better flavour, and last longer. The main advantage of Egyptian bowls is their low cost.
Do I need a special bowl for an HMD?
You need a bowl with a lip that matches your HMD's inner diameter. Most phunnel bowls designed in the last few years are HMD-compatible. If you use an Egyptian bowl, the Provost HMD works over foil on any bowl.
How often should I replace my hookah bowl?
A quality clay bowl lasts years with proper care. Replace it if it cracks, chips, or starts giving consistently poor sessions despite proper packing and heat management. Unglazed clay bowls that have absorbed too many flavours can also benefit from replacement.
Should I buy glazed or unglazed clay?
Glazed bowls don't absorb flavours, making them versatile. Unglazed bowls absorb some flavour over time — some smokers believe this adds character. If you smoke many different flavours, go glazed. If you stick to one flavour family, unglazed is fine.
Can I use any bowl with any hookah?
