Nobody buys a hookah because they’re excited about cleaning it. But here’s the thing that took me embarrassingly long to figure out: most “my shisha tastes off” complaints are really “my hookah is filthy” complaints. The first time I pulled my hose out of a drawer after a couple of weeks off and caught that stale, musty whiff, I realised I’d been blaming flavours and coals for something that was entirely my own doing.
The good news: keeping a hookah clean is quick, cheap, and done almost entirely with stuff already in your kitchen cupboard. Here’s the routine that keeps every bowl tasting the way it’s meant to.
Why It Actually Matters
Every session leaves something behind — sticky molasses residue, fine ash, tar, and the mineral scale that warm water leaves on glass. Let it build and three things happen: old flavours start “ghosting” into new bowls (smoke a mint, then taste it faintly under your next fruit bowl), your draw gets tighter as gunk narrows the airways, and damp residue becomes a happy home for mould. None of that is dramatic on day one. It just creeps up until one day your favourite flavour tastes like wet cardboard.
What You’ll Need
- A brush set — a long stem brush, a fat base brush, and a thin hose brush. A few quid online and they reach the bits your fingers can’t.
- Bicarbonate of soda — a gentle abrasive that lifts residue without scratching glass or metal.
- Lemon juice or white vinegar — cuts through mineral scale and kills odours.
- Warm water — warm, not boiling. Boiling water down a cold glass base can crack it from the thermal shock; I learned that one the hard way.
- Pipe cleaners for the fiddly ports, plus a soft cloth for drying.
The Base
This is the one to never skip. Tip the water out the moment you’re done — leaving it overnight is how you get stains and that swampy smell. Then half-fill with warm water, add a couple of tablespoons of bicarb and a good squeeze of lemon (it’ll fizz, which is exactly what you want), and go at the inside with the base brush. Pay attention to the waterline, where the scummy ring always forms. For stubborn staining, leave it to soak with a splash of white vinegar for half an hour, then scrub again. Rinse it properly — three times, until the water runs clear and there’s no fizz left.
The Stem
The stem is where tar quietly collects and ghosts your flavours, so it earns a proper clean. Pull it off the base, take out the grommets, and run warm water through both ends to flush the loose stuff. Then work the stem brush through with a twisting motion a few times — if it comes out grim, repeat. A little bicarb paste on the brush handles a heavier build-up. Don’t forget the small openings: a pipe cleaner through the purge valve and hose port clears the bits the brush misses. Dry the outside with a cloth so you don’t get water spots on the finish.
The Hose
Everything here depends on one question: is your hose washable? Modern silicone hoses are; old leather-and-coil ones absolutely are not — run water through one of those and the inner wire rusts. If yours is washable, flush warm water through both ends, swish a bit of lemon water through, push the hose brush through if you’ve got one, rinse, then hang it up with both ends pointing down so it drains and dries fully. Trapped moisture is the number-one cause of a musty hose. If yours isn’t washable, just blow firmly through it after each session and replace it once the ghosting won’t shift — and honestly, take that as your nudge to switch to silicone.
The Bowl
Let it cool completely first — a hot bowl under cold water is another crack waiting to happen. Tip out the spent tobacco, then soak the bowl in warm water with a spoon of bicarb for 15–20 minutes. An old toothbrush gets into the inside and around the holes; with a phunnel, make a point of clearing the central spire, because residue loves to collect there and choke your airflow. Rinse and let it dry fully before it goes away.
Tray & Grommets
The tray just needs a wipe with a damp cloth after each session, or warm soapy water when molasses has made it sticky. While everything’s apart, give the grommets a look — a cracked or stretched grommet causes air leaks that quietly ruin sessions, and they cost pennies to replace. If one no longer grips snugly, bin it.
How Often, Really?
You don’t need the full teardown every time. Two routines cover it:
After every session (5 minutes): empty and rinse the base, run water through the stem, blow out or rinse the hose, wipe the tray, rinse the bowl. That’s it — do this and you’ll rarely need more.
Every 5–10 sessions (the deep clean): the full bicarb-and-lemon scrub of the base, a proper brush through the stem, a soak for the bowl, pipe cleaners through the ports, and a grommet check.
Drying & Storing It
Drying matters as much as washing — put it away damp and you’re inviting mould and corrosion. Let everything air-dry fully (a couple of hours, longer in a cold room), stand the stem upright so it drains, and store the lot somewhere cool and dry out of direct sun. The single rule I’d tattoo on every beginner: never store it with water in the base.
Signs It’s Overdue
If you spot any of these, stop and clean before your next bowl: old flavours ghosting through, a draw that’s suddenly harder than usual, cloudy water or a filmy base, a musty smell off the hose, harsh smoke even with sensible heat, or — the one that means clean it now — dark mould spots inside the base or hose. Catch it early and a five-minute rinse keeps your rig tasting like the day you bought it.
