Taking your hookah on holiday, to a festival, or to a mate's house does not have to be stressful. With the right preparation and a bit of common sense, you can set up a session anywhere. Here is everything you need to know. Travelling outside the UK? Our international travel hookah guide covers TSA rules and country-specific notes.
Travelling by Car
This is the easiest option. Pack your hookah in a padded bag or wrap it in towels to prevent scratches and breakage. Keep the base separate from the stem if possible, and transport it upright to avoid water damage from any residual liquid.
- Clean it before packing. Leftover water in the base will spill, and stale tobacco in the bowl will smell.
- Bring a dedicated bag. Many hookah brands sell carry cases specifically designed for their pipes.
- Pack charcoal separately in a sealed container. Loose charcoal can create dust in your car.
Travelling by Train or Coach
There are no restrictions on carrying a hookah on UK trains or coaches. Treat it like any fragile item — keep it in a padded bag in the luggage rack or at your feet. Obviously, do not attempt to smoke it on the train.
Flying With a Hookah
Checked Luggage
Hookahs are permitted in checked luggage on most UK airlines. The key rules:
- Clean it thoroughly. Any tobacco residue may trigger questions at security. A spotless pipe is less likely to cause delays.
- Wrap each component separately. Bubble wrap the glass base, and use socks or clothing to pad the stem and bowl.
- Remove all charcoal. Some airlines prohibit loose charcoal in luggage. Check your airline's policy.
- Do not pack lighters or matches in checked bags. These must go in your carry-on (one lighter per person).
Carry-On Luggage
This is where it gets complicated. Most airports will allow hookah components through security, but the glass base may be flagged as a potential weapon. Metal stems can also trigger secondary screening. To avoid delays, we recommend packing your hookah in checked luggage.
Shisha Tobacco on Flights
Within the UK, you can carry shisha tobacco in your luggage without restriction. For international flights, you are subject to the destination country's tobacco import limits. Within the EU, the duty-free allowance is typically 250g of smoking tobacco. Always check your destination's customs rules before packing.

FAQ
Can I take a hookah through airport security?
In checked luggage, yes. In carry-on, it depends on the airport and airline. Glass components and metal stems may be confiscated at security. Checked luggage is the safer option.
Is shisha tobacco legal in all countries?
Shisha tobacco is legal in most countries but may be heavily regulated or taxed. Some countries restrict flavoured tobacco. Always check local laws before your trip.
Will my hookah survive in a suitcase?
With proper wrapping, yes. Glass bases are the most vulnerable component. Wrap in bubble wrap and surround with soft clothing. Consider a hardshell suitcase for extra protection.
